Writer’s Statement

Harrisun’s work has been described as absurdist, visually rich and significant. He is passionate about exploring local stories, re-writing historical events with an edgy, queer lens. He likes to draw an audience in with comedy as a trojan horse to deliciously dark social commentary; using obscure and heightened realistic metaphor to tackle hard-hitting stories on the human experience, political commentary and underrepresented voices.

His work as a writer spans theatre, television, radio, composition and lyricism. His training has given him a unique experience and insight into building complex and compelling characters. He recently completed a 10-week training course on writing for television focusing on the fundamentals of character, sacred flaws, structure, story/flow and technique for his current written projects (TBA), offering and being offered consistent feedback through open discussions and workshops; continuing honing his own editorial skills as a Script Editor. Compositionally, Harrisun has a number of theatre and musical projects underway including Anything is Popsicle exploring the queer experience, self-discovery and rainbow capitalism (find out more here).

Aside from his compositional work, his songwriting has its own unique voice and sound. Using his background in theatre, Harrisun brings a performative flair to his music; with a passion for hiding multiple meanings and vulnerable songwriting behind complex, colourful motifs, synths and instant pop hooks. Harrisun cites his influences from a range of indie and brit pop, namely Tennis, MUNA, Troye Sivan, Everything Everything and Stealing Sheep. With a flair for the dramatic, he’s also inspired by orchestral and classical influences and techniques.
